JP leader Qasim Ibrahim has been elected the speaker of the parliament.
Qasim Ibrahim and PPM's deputy leader Abduh Raheem were the only contenders in the election. Qasim Ibrahim got 62 votes while Abduh Raheem got 16 votes.
There were 2 invalid votes.
Qasim Ibrahim's name was nominated as the speaker by MP Ibrahim Mohammed Solih. He motion was supported by MP Faisal Naseem.
Abduh Raheem's name was nominated by MP Ali Arif. The motion was supported by MP Falaah.
Former President Nasheed previously stated that Qasim Ibrahim has the capacity to lead the parliament. Qasim also presided as the speaker of the parliament which drafted the constitution. In addition he was also the governor of MMA and Finance Ministers.
MP Abdhuh Raheem vowed to increase the salary of MPs and offered "bribes" indirectly.
The speaker of the parliament Abdullah Maseeh resigned after the MPs planned to impeach him tonight.
