Jumhooree Party has again called the government to revise the wages of the civil servants.
Speaking at yesterday’s session of the Peoples’ Majlis, the deputy leader of the Parliamentary Group of the Jumhooree Party, Kinbidhoo constituency MP, Abdulla Riyaz said that the Jumhooree Party has included this as a recommendation by the party.
“We do not believe that the wages frame work of the staffs are fair and just. Therefore, what we want is that this frame work is revised and make the wages of the civil servants are just and equal. I do believe that the wages especially of the teachers should be increased. I request and appeal the government to increase the wages of the teachers and civil servants when such a big budget is passed for the year 2015,” he said.
Abdulla Riyaz said that MVR 5000 is not enough to live by in Maldives. He said that the basic needs cannot be fulfilled by MVR 5000. He said that many of the civil servants do not even get MVR 5000 as their basic salary.
Abdulla Riyaz stressed that the wage should be a living wage, which means that the wage a worker earns in a standard working month is enough to provide for them and their family's basic needs - including housing, education and other needs.
With escalating living costs in housing, food, clothing, education, he noted that the normal wage range in Maldives simply is not enough.
