Fund box was opened as a lot of people were volunteering to help financially- govt

Government has stated that the reason for opening the fund box was because many people were volunteering to help financially.

Minister Nazim from the Task Force stated that the fund box was opened so that any financial donation will be transparent.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday evening on behalf of the task force assembled by the President, Minister Nazim said, that the fund box opened has been receiving a lot of criticism by the citizens, accusing that it is another political charade. He appealed the people not to see it from such a point of view.

The Minister decided to open the fund box since a lot of people were volunteering to help financially in the process of resolving the current water situation in Male’.

“We will not keep many find boxes in different islands of all the Atolls of Maldives,” said Nazim.

He further stated that collecting huge sums of money from individuals without a fund box would raise a lot of questions in people’s minds and that the names of those contributing to the fund box will be revealed. Also that all the information regarding the fund box will be shared with the public by the President’s Office so that the people can clearly know how the money is being contributed by who.

“Each and every citizen of Male’ does not necessarily need to donate to the fund. The able ones are welcome to. This fund box is mainly aimed to the traders and businessman in the country.” He said.

The Minister also said that right now, he is not seeing the issue from the company’s perspective and that he is regarding this as an issue that needs resolving on a National level. He further said that the operation being conducted now to distribute water to the residents of Male’ is a costly process for which the government is bearing the expenses.

On being asked by the media if any of the funds being collected would be spent on MWSC, he did not give a specific answer. Although, he said that as the funds are being collected, the President’s Office will share information with the public on how it will be spent.
